When Levi got up the next morning and hobbled to the table for breakfast with his crutch, Anna sucked in her breath. This had too much of a family feel to it, something that she longed for, but not with just anyone.

Ellie didn’t hide her joy but had to sit on Levi’s lap to eat. He smiled sweetly at the little girl and didn’t complain about feeding her.

Ellie looked up at him with her mouth filled with mush and mumbled, “Da-da.” Then she looked over at Anna, pointed her finger, and said “Ma-ma.”

Anna didn’t know what to say, so she tried to ignore her daughter’s words. She didn’t want to argue with Levi over it again, and she didn’t want to scold Ellie for trying to talk.

She had feared Ellie might be behind other children her age due to her early birth and sickly start. The fact that she could now pull up to stand and had begun to assign words to objects relieved the worry about Ellie’s progress, and she knew that she had Levi to thank for much of it. How could she reprimand them?

After he’d eaten, Levi sat at the table while she cleaned up and washed the dishes. He put Ellie down but held to her as she took a few steps around the front of his chair.

When Anna had finished, she had Levi go back to bed and put Ellie on it with him. She needed to do the outside chores, and she knew Levi would likely tire before she got back if he remained sitting up.
